Description
The North Cascades Highway (State Route 20), is a state highway that traverses the State of Washington. The path across the Cascades follows one of the oldest state roads in Washington, established in 1896 as a wagon route.
The Highway is part of the Cascade Loop which is a 440-mile route winding through the North Cascades of Snohomish, King, Chelan, Okanogan, and Skagit counties; through Skagit Valley along the Skagit River; and through Fidalgo and Whidbey islands.
The Cascade Range is best known for its tall volcanoes and deep evergreen forests. While the North Cascades contain an extremely rugged cluster of jagged peaks, it is the long line of snowy volcanic cones running from Mount Baker south to Lassen Peak that dominate the range for its entire length.
